Issue description

The control software has detected that the electrical current (amps) at the solenoid for Gear 3 is too low. This condition typically indicates an open circuit, which is usually caused by damaged wiring, a disconnected plug, or a faulty/burnt-out solenoid coil. When this code is active, the transmission will experience limited gear functionality, and Gear 3 may not engage.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Gear 3 solenoid on the DirectDrive transmission valve body. Look for any signs of chafing, broken wires, or rodent damage.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the electrical plug at the Gear 3 solenoid. Check for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or loose connections.

  3. Coil Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, test the resistance (ohms) across the pins of the Gear 3 solenoid coil. If the reading shows infinite resistance (OL), the coil has an internal break (open circuit) and the solenoid must be replaced.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: If the solenoid tests within specification, test the continuity of the wiring harness from the solenoid connector back to the GPM controller to locate the break in the wire.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor

    Safely park the tractor on level ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate solenoid

    Locate the DirectDrive transmission valve body and identify the specific solenoid assigned to Gear 3.

  3. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the Gear 3 solenoid.

  5. Repair wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, repair the broken wire or replace the damaged connector pigtail.

  6. Remove faulty solenoid

    If the solenoid coil itself failed, remove the retaining hardware (usually a retaining nut or bolt) and carefully extract the faulty solenoid valve from the valve body.

  7. Install new solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new OEM solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve body. Torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.

  8. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness connector.

  9. Clear codes and test

    Clear the fault codes from the GPM module and test drive the tractor to verify that Gear 3 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
