John Deere 522092.06 – GPM (Gear Shift Module Direct Drive): High Amps On Gear 3 Solenoid Coil

Issue description

The control software has detected that the electrical current (amperage) at the solenoid responsible for engaging Gear 3 is too high. This condition typically indicates a short circuit. The short could be an internal failure of the solenoid coil itself (shorted windings) or a wiring harness issue where the power wire is shorting directly to ground.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the GPM to the Gear 3 transmission solenoid. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the Gear 3 solenoid and at the GPM. Check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the connections.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the internal resistance of the Gear 3 solenoid coil. If the resistance reads at or near 0 ohms, the coil is internally shorted and the solenoid must be replaced.

  4. With the solenoid unplugged, turn the key on and check if the code changes from 522092.06 (High Amps/Short) to 522092.05 (Low Amps/Open). If it changes to the 'Low Amps' code, the wiring is likely intact and the solenoid itself is the culprit.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Locate the Valve Block

    Locate the DirectDrive transmission valve block where the gear shift solenoids are housed.

  3. Identify Gear 3 Solenoid

    Using a service manual diagram, identify the specific solenoid valve assigned to Gear 3.

  4. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the Gear 3 solenoid.

  5. Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

    If your diagnostics revealed a wiring short, splice and repair the damaged section of the harness using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the harness section.

  6. Solenoid Replacement (If Applicable)

    If the solenoid is internally shorted, remove the retaining bolt/hardware securing the Gear 3 solenoid to the valve block.

  7. Installation

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new OEM solenoid valve with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.

  8. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid.

  9. Clear and Test

    Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the 522092.06 code from the GPM. Start the tractor and test drive it, ensuring Gear 3 engages smoothly without triggering the fault.
