John Deere 522191.04 – PTQ: Low Voltage Range C-D Position Sensor

Issue description

The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the transmission's Range C-D position sensor that is below the minimum acceptable threshold. This condition is typically caused by a short to ground in the sensor's signal wire, a disconnected harness, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the Range C-D position sensor on the transmission housing. Inspect the wiring harness leading from the PTQ module to the sensor for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor. Inspect the pins on both the sensor and the harness side for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

  3. Voltage Test: Turn the key to the ON position (engine off). Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically 5V) and has a solid ground on the harness side.

  4. Signal Wire Continuity: Test the signal wire from the sensor connector back to the PTQ module for continuity and ensure it is not shorted to the chassis ground.

  5. If the wiring, reference voltage, and ground are all good, the sensor has likely failed internally and is pulling the signal voltage low.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Clean sensor area

    Clean the area around the Range C-D position sensor on the transmission housing to prevent dirt from entering the transmission.

  3. Disconnect sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove retaining bolts

    Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the transmission housing.

  5. Remove old sensor

    Carefully pull the old sensor out of the housing.

  6. Lubricate new sensor O-ring

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission hydraulic oil.

  7. Install new sensor

    Insert the new sensor into the housing and tighten the retaining hardware to OEM torque specifications.

  8. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  9. Clear fault code

    Power on the tractor and clear the stored PTQ 522191.04 fault code using the cab display or John Deere Service ADVISOR.

  10. Perform transmission calibration

    Crucial Final Step: Because a new position sensor has been installed, you must perform a transmission calibration procedure so the PTQ module can learn the new sensor's exact neutral, C, and D slide positions.
