John Deere 522191.07 – GPM (Gear Shift Module Direct Drive): Gear Shift On Shaft 2 Has Not Been Possible
Issue description
This diagnostic trouble code is generated when the control software detects that a gear cannot be engaged on Side Shaft 2 (which houses even gears: 2, 4, 6, and 8). This condition typically occurs if the previous gear on the same shaft remains physically stuck after a shift command is sent to the transmission, indicating a mechanical binding or failure on Side Shaft 2. As a safety reaction, the control software will limit or completely disable transmission functionality to prevent further internal damage.

Check the cause
Check the CommandCenter for accompanying GPM solenoid electrical codes (e.g., current too high/low) to rule out a wiring short or open circuit causing the shift failure.
Inspect engine speed parameters to ensure the engine speed is not too high during shifting (often accompanied by code 524277.00).
Conduct a mechanical inspection of Side Shaft 2 for signs of wear, damage, or misalignment that would physically prevent gear engagement.
Repair steps
Drain Fluids
Drain the transmission/hydraulic fluid and remove the DirectDrive transmission oil filters.
Access the Transmission
Split the tractor to access the DirectDrive transmission assembly.
Inspect Side Shaft 2
Locate Side Shaft 2 (controlling gears 2/4/6/8). Inspect the shift forks, synchronizers, and the shaft itself for mechanical binding, scoring, or broken components.
Lubricate and Replace
Ensure all moving parts on Side Shaft 2 are properly lubricated to prevent sticking. Replace any worn gears, bent shift forks, or damaged synchronizers causing the mechanical bind.
Reassemble and Service
Reassemble the transmission housing. Install new transmission oil filters (see parts below) and refill the system with approved John Deere transmission fluid.
Clear and Calibrate
Clear the GPM fault codes via the diagnostic menu and perform a transmission calibration procedure to ensure the Gear Shift Module recognizes the correct shift unit positions.
