Issue description

The transmission controller is receiving a voltage signal from the Range E-F position sensor that is below the acceptable minimum threshold (typically near 0V). Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the PTQ module to the transmission valve housing where the Range E-F position sensor is located. Look for chafed wires, pinch points, or melted insulation.

  3. Voltage Supply Test: With the key in the ON position (engine off), use a multimeter to probe the sensor connector. Verify that the sensor is receiving a steady 5V reference from the PTQ module and has a solid ground.

  4. Signal Wire Continuity: Check the signal wire for continuity between the sensor connector and the PTQ module harness. Test the signal wire for a short to ground. If the wiring is intact and the 5V supply is present, the sensor itself has likely failed.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the Range E-F position sensor on the CommandQuad transmission housing (refer to the OEM service manual for the exact port location on the transmission valve block).

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the transmission housing and carefully pull the sensor out.

  4. Installation

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new sensor into the housing and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification.

  5. Reconnection

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration

    Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR (or a compatible diagnostic tool like Jaltest) to the tractor's diagnostic port. Clear the inactive 522197.04 fault code. You must then perform a transmission calibration (Range change diagnosis configuration) so the PTQ module can learn the new sensor's neutral and end-stroke positions.
