John Deere 522311.06 – VLC (Vehicle Load Center Control Unit): Rear Washer Pump Circuit Current High

Issue description

The control unit has detected that the electrical current draw on the rear washer pump circuit is excessively high. This is typically caused by a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, a seized washer pump motor, or an internal short within the pump itself.

Check the cause

  1. Restart the engine to verify if the active Diagnostic Trouble Code reappears, as it may be a temporary communication glitch.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading from the VLC to the rear washer pump. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the chassis (causing a short to ground), or melted insulation.

  3. Verify that the fuse and relay for the rear washer pump circuit are intact. A blown fuse alongside this code heavily points to a dead short.

  4. Isolate the pump: Disconnect the electrical connector directly at the rear washer pump, turn the key on, and attempt to activate the rear washer. If the fault code changes to VLC 522311.05 (Current Low / Open Circuit), the pump itself is internally shorted or seized. If the 522311.06 code persists, the short to ground is located in the wiring harness.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Locate the rear washer pump

    Locate the rear washer pump, which is typically mounted directly to the bottom or side of the windshield washer fluid reservoir.

  3. Repair the wiring harness

    If your diagnostic checks proved the wiring harness is shorted, trace the harness back toward the cab/VLC, locate the damaged section of wire, splice in a repair using weather-sealed connectors, and secure it away from pinch points.

  4. Prepare to replace the pump

    If the diagnostic checks proved the pump is faulty, place a catch pan under the reservoir to catch draining washer fluid.

  5. Disconnect the pump

    Disconnect the electrical connector and the rubber fluid hose from the pump.

  6. Remove the old pump

    Pull the old pump out of the rubber grommet in the reservoir.

  7. Install the new pump

    Press the new replacement pump firmly into the reservoir grommet (replace the grommet if it is torn or leaking).

  8. Reconnect the pump

    Reconnect the fluid hose and the electrical connector.

  9. Refill the reservoir

    Refill the washer fluid reservoir.

  10. Test the system

    Turn the key on, clear the codes via the CommandCenter display (if applicable), and test the rear washer to ensure proper operation and that the code does not return.
