Issue description

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the DTC is intermittent, which points to a loose connection or chafed wire rather than a hard component failure.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the K4/C4 solenoid for any signs of shorting to power, such as melted insulation or exposed wires touching a power source.

  3. Examine all connections at the transmission valve block and the TCU/PTA to ensure they are secure, fully seated, and free of moisture or corrosion.

  4. Use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the signal input of the K4 solenoid valve and compare the resistance of the solenoid coil against OEM specifications to check for an internal short.

  5. Ensure the TCU is correctly processing signals and that the software is up to date.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground to ensure safety while working on the transmission electrical system.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block and identify the specific K4 (or C4) clutch solenoid valve.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wiring or replace the affected harness segment.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

    If the wiring is intact but the solenoid coil failed the resistance/voltage test, remove the retaining hardware for the K4 solenoid valve and extract the faulty solenoid from the valve block.

  5. Install New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Install the new solenoid into the valve block and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.

  6. Reconnect and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the solenoid. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR) to clear the 522389.03 fault code from the PTA/TCU.

  7. Test Operation

    Start the machine and perform a test drive, ensuring smooth shifting and verifying that the code does not return.
