John Deere 522389.05 – Transmission Module IVT (PTA) / TCU: Low Amps On Clutch K4 Solenoid
Issue description
The control software detects that the current (amperage) value at the solenoid valve for clutch 4 (C4/K4) does not correspond with the commanded switch status of the clutch, indicating an open circuit and insufficient current flow. This typically results in limited or no transmission functionality.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness for the K4/C4 solenoid for any signs of disconnection, breaks, or chafing
Ensure all electrical connectors associated with the clutch 4 solenoid are secure, fully seated, and free of moisture or corrosion
Use a multimeter to measure the current flow (amps) and resistance at the signal input of the K4 solenoid valve. Compare the resistance reading against the OEM spec for your specific transmission to determine if the internal coil is open
Verify that the solenoid valve circuit is properly grounded, as a poor ground can cause low current flow
Verify that the PTA/TCU is correctly processing and sending the voltage/current signal to the solenoid
Repair steps
Repair Wiring/Connectors
If the diagnostic checks reveal broken wires, damaged pins, or corroded connectors in the transmission harness, repair or replace the damaged sections to restore continuity.
Replace the Solenoid Valve
If the wiring and control unit outputs are intact but the K4 solenoid valve fails the multimeter resistance/current test (indicating an internal open circuit), safely relieve hydraulic pressure and replace the K4 transmission clutch solenoid valve.
Update Software
Verify and update the PTA/TCU control unit software to the latest version to ensure proper signal processing.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Clear the 522389.05 fault code from the PTA module, perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure (if required by your specific model's service manual), and test drive the machine to ensure full transmission functionality is restored.
