John Deere 522392.03 – Transmission Module (PTA or TCU): High Voltage On Clutch K3 Solenoid
Issue description
The transmission control software has detected that the voltage in the circuit for the K3 (or C3) clutch proportional solenoid valve is higher than the expected operating range. This typically indicates a short to power within the wiring harness, a failed solenoid coil, or a malfunction within the controller itself, causing the transmission to enter Limp Home mode.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness from the PTA/TCU to the K3/C3 transmission solenoid for rubbed, melted, or pinched wires that could be shorting directly to a power source.
Disconnect the harness at the K3 solenoid and at the transmission module. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals that could bridge power circuits.
Test the solenoid valve using a digital multimeter to measure the resistance (Ohms) across the K3 solenoid coil pins. A reading of near-zero ohms indicates an internal short in the solenoid.
Check grounding to ensure the transmission module and the solenoid circuit are properly grounded, as floating grounds can cause erratic high-voltage readings.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower any attachments, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Access the Transmission Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve assembly (refer to the specific machine's technical manual for the exact location of the K3/C3 solenoid on the valve block).
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power in the harness, splice and repair the damaged wire using weather-sealed connectors, or replace that section of the transmission harness.
Replace the Solenoid
Thoroughly clean the area around the K3 solenoid. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the retaining bolts or snap ring, and pull the faulty solenoid valve out of the bore. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid, insert the new solenoid, secure the retaining hardware to OEM torque specs, and reconnect the harness.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery. Use John Deere Service ADVISOR (or a compatible diagnostic tool) to clear the 522392.03 code. Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure after replacing a proportional solenoid to ensure smooth shifting.
