Issue description

The transmission controller has detected a voltage reading below the expected threshold on the circuit for the Clutch 3 (or K3) solenoid valve. This is typically caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, a damaged connector, or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the PTA/TCU to the transmission valve body for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the K3/C3 solenoid and at the controller to check pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals.

  3. Test the specific circuit for the Clutch 3 Solenoid Valve for continuity using a multimeter and verify it is not shorted to the machine's chassis ground.

  4. Measure the resistance across the pins of the K3/C3 solenoid coil to check for an internal short.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Safely park the machine on level ground, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Access the Valve Body

    Locate the transmission control valve block where the clutch solenoids are housed (location varies depending on whether it is a tractor IVT or a loader powershift transmission).

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the harness, repair the damaged section of wire using proper weather-sealed splices, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace Solenoid

    If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test: Clean the area around the K3/C3 solenoid to prevent debris from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining bolt/clip holding the solenoid valve in place. Extract the faulty solenoid and discard the old O-rings. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve body. Torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.

  5. Reassembly & Calibration

    Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. Connect a diagnostic tool (like John Deere Service ADVISOR) to clear the 522392.04 fault code.

  6. Recalibration

    Run the automated transmission clutch calibration procedure, as the engagement characteristics of the new C3/K3 solenoid will differ from the old one.
