John Deere 522395.03 – Transmission Module IVT (PTA) / TCU (Transmission Control Unit): High Voltage On Clutch K2 Solenoid / Clutch K2 Solenoid Short to Power

Issue description

The control unit registers resistance and voltage at the solenoid valve that do not correspond with the expected switch status of clutch 2. This indicates that the circuit has a short to a positive lead (short to power) or that the solenoid valve itself is defective. The fault is typically recognized by the control unit during initialization (boot sequence after the ignition is switched ON) or when the transmission is operating in speed bands 2, 3, and 4.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the ignition to see if the code is active during the control unit boot sequence (Initialization Check)

  2. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the PTA/TCU to the Clutch 2 (K2) Solenoid Valve for rubbed, chafed, or melted wires that could cause a short to power

  3. Disconnect the K2 solenoid and measure its internal resistance using a multimeter to determine if the solenoid coil is internally shorted

  4. With the solenoid disconnected and the key ON, probe the harness connector to verify if voltage is present when it shouldn't be (confirming a short to power in the harness)

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing transmission electrical components.

  2. Access the Valve Body

    Locate the transmission control valve block where the shift solenoids are housed (location varies between IVT tractors and loader powershift transmissions).

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power in the harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness and replace the connector if it is corroded or melted.

  4. Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)

    If the harness tests good but the solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the retaining bolt/plate holding the K2 solenoid in the valve body. Extract the defective solenoid and O-rings.

  5. Install New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve body and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassemble and Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery, clear the stored 522395.03 fault code via the monitor or Service ADVISOR, and perform a transmission calibration/initialization procedure to ensure the PTA/TCU learns the new solenoid's engagement characteristics.
