John Deere 522399.04 – Transmission Module IVT (PTA) / TCU (Transmission Control Unit): Low Voltage On Clutch K1 Solenoid
Issue description
The control unit registers a resistance at the solenoid valve that does not correspond with the expected switch status of Clutch 1, accompanied by an abnormal voltage drop. This typically indicates a short to ground in the Clutch K1 solenoid valve circuit. When this occurs, the equipment may experience issues with Clutch 1 operation, and the transmission may enter a protective shutdown or limp mode.

Check the cause
Determine if the DTC periodically 'goes away.' If it is intermittent, the issue is likely a loose connection or a wire that is rubbing against the chassis rather than a hard failure of the solenoid.
Inspect the transmission wiring harness leading to the Clutch K1 (C1) solenoid valve. Look for chafing, pinched wires, or exposed copper that could be shorting to the machine's frame/ground.
Disconnect the wiring harness at the K1 solenoid. Measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. Compare this to the OEM spec for your specific machine to see if the coil itself is internally shorted.
Test the wiring harness from the PTA/TCU connector to the solenoid connector for continuity to ground.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Isolate the Short
Based on the diagnostic checks, determine if the short to ground is in the wiring harness or internal to the solenoid valve.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If the multimeter shows a short to ground in the wiring harness, locate the damaged section of the wire. Splice and repair the wire using weather-sealed connectors, or replace that section of the transmission harness.
Solenoid Replacement (If Applicable)
If the wiring tests fine but the solenoid coil is internally shorted: Clean the area around the transmission control valve block to prevent debris from entering the hydraulic system. Disconnect the electrical connector from the K1 solenoid. Unthread and remove the faulty K1 proportional solenoid valve from the transmission valve body. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Install the new solenoid valve and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Calibration
Connect John Deere Service ADVISOR. Clear the stored 522399.04 fault code. Run the interactive transmission calibration/test to ensure the PTA module recognizes the new solenoid and that Clutch 1 engages properly without dropping voltage.
