522451.01

John Deere 522451.01 – Steering System Control Unit (XSC or SSU): Steering Angle Sensor (Secondary) Signal Low

Issue description

Voltage on the signal line of Channel 2 of the Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) drops below 0.25 volts for longer than 320 milliseconds, indicating an open circuit, a short to ground, or a complete internal failure of the sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Restart the tractor to see if the active code reappears, as communication messages may simply need to be reset.

  2. Inspect the Wheel Angle Sensor (located on the front axle) for physical damage, heavy wear, or debris accumulation.

  3. Check the wiring harness and connectors associated with the sensor, paying special attention to the wiring after the junction box for signs of rubbing, corrosion, or loose connections.

  4. Use a John Deere diagnostic tool (Service ADVISOR) to monitor the sensor's voltage levels in real-time and verify if Channel 2 is actively reading below the 0.25V threshold.

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire or corroded connector in the harness leading to the axle, repair or replace the damaged harness section.

  2. Replace the Sensor

If the wiring is intact but the voltage remains low, the Wheel Angle Sensor has failed internally. Remove the mounting hardware securing the old sensor to the front axle and disconnect the harness.

  3. Install New Sensor

Mount the new Dual Output Rotary Position Sensor and securely connect the wiring harness. (Note: It is highly recommended to replace the short sub-harness connected to the sensor at the same time).

  4. Calibrate and Test

Clear the diagnostic trouble codes from the CommandCenter display. Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to ensure the code does not return and verify that AutoTrac engages properly.

  5. Software Update

Check for and install any available updates for the XSC/SSU control software to address potential signal processing bugs.
