Issue description

PTP: Front Axle Steering Angle Position Sensor Signals Out Of Range High Voltage (signal voltage returning from the steering angle sensor to the controller is exceeding the maximum expected threshold). BCU: Non-Existent Function Activated (software programming error or miscommunication where a command is issued for a function that does not exist).

Check the cause

  1. If diagnosing PTP (Wheel Angle Sensor cause): Inspect the B67 Wheel Angle Sensor located on the front steering axle. Check the physical linkage for damage, bending, or disconnection.

  2. If diagnosing PTP (Wheel Angle Sensor cause): Disconnect the sensor and inspect the harness connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.

  3. If diagnosing PTP (Wheel Angle Sensor cause): Using a multimeter, check the sensor's wiring harness for a short to a power source (like a 5V reference or 12V battery voltage) or a lost ground connection.

  4. If diagnosing PTP (Wheel Angle Sensor cause): Perform a sensor sweep test. Monitor the sensor's voltage output while manually turning the wheels from lock to lock. If the voltage spikes out of range or stays stuck high, the sensor has failed internally.

  5. If diagnosing BCU (Software/Wiring cause): Verify the software configuration in the BCU. Ensure no optional features are enabled in the monitor that are not physically installed on the machine.

  6. If diagnosing BCU (Software/Wiring cause): Check for open circuits in the wiring harness related to the nonexistent function triggered in address BCU071.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the machine on a level surface, center the steering, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the B67 Wheel Angle Sensor. Unbolt the sensor housing from the front axle mounting bracket and carefully detach the mechanical linkage arm.

  3. Installation

    Mount the new Wheel Angle Sensor to the axle bracket. Reattach the mechanical linkage, ensuring it is centered according to the OEM service manual specifications.

  4. Reconnection

    Plug in the electrical connector and reconnect the battery.

  5. Calibration

    Connect the John Deere Service Advisor diagnostic tool and perform the 'Wheel Angle Sensor Calibration' procedure so the PTP module learns the new center, left-lock, and right-lock voltage values.

  6. Verification

    Clear the fault codes and test drive the machine, verifying that AutoTrac and standard steering functions operate without triggering the code.
