John Deere 522451 – XSC / SSU: Wheel Angle Sensor Channel 2, Voltage Too High
Issue description
Voltage at signal line 986 of channel 2 of the Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) exceeds 2.25 volts for longer than 320 milliseconds, disrupting normal steering operation and causing automatic disengagement of the AutoTrac/autosteer system.

Check the cause
Restart the engine to see if resetting the communication messages clears a temporary glitch
Use diagnostic tools to monitor sensor voltage in real-time and verify if Channel 2 exceeds 2.25 volts
Check the power supply to channel 2 of the Wheel Angle Sensor to ensure proper voltage regulation
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the front axle for physical damage, loose connections, or corrosion
Ensure the XSC/SSU control software is up-to-date to rule out signal processing bugs
Repair steps
Power Cycle
Turn off the tractor, wait a few moments, and restart it to verify if the DTC is active or stored.
Harness Inspection
If the code remains active, physically trace the wiring harness from the Wheel Angle Sensor on the steering axle back to the main harness connection.
Harness Replacement
If the wiring is corroded, frayed, or damaged by field debris, replace the affected harness section (including the short harness pigtail alongside the sensor if necessary).
Sensor Replacement
If the wiring is intact and the overvoltage condition is internal to the sensor, the Wheel Angle Sensor is defective. Remove the mounting hardware securing the old sensor to the axle and disconnect it.
Install New Sensor
Mount the new Dual Output Rotary Position Sensor and plug it into the harness.
Calibration & Clearing
Clear the diagnostic trouble codes via the CommandCenter or diagnostic tool. Test the steering system and AutoTrac functionality to ensure the voltage ratio between Channel 1 and Channel 2 is correct.
