522456.07

John Deere 522456.07 – PTR: Speed Control Lever Park and Neutral Switch Conflict

Issue description

The PTR control unit has detected that both the Park Switch and the Neutral Switch on the Speed Control Lever are closed at the exact same time (522456.07), or a transition of the Speed Control Lever occurred without the operator depressing the clutch pedal (522456.31).

Check the cause

  1. For code 522456.07 (Switch Conflict): Inspect the Park and Neutral switches on the speed control lever assembly for physical damage, sticking, or debris preventing normal movement.

  2. For code 522456.07 (Switch Conflict): Inspect the wiring harness and connectors related to the Park and Neutral switches for corrosion, chafed wires causing a short to ground, or wires shorting together.

  3. For code 522456.07 (Switch Conflict): Use a multimeter to test the switch circuitry, verifying that the switches open and close independently and that there is no continuity indicating both are closed simultaneously.

  4. For code 522456.31 (Clutch Transition): Inspect the clutch pedal position sensor (potentiometer) at the base of the clutch pedal to ensure it is correctly aligned, securely mounted, and free of dirt or physical damage.

  5. For code 522456.31 (Clutch Transition): Use a multimeter to test the clutch pedal sensor's voltage sweep as the pedal is depressed, looking for dead spots, open circuits, or erratic voltage drops.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Access the Faulty Component

For code 522456.07: Remove the console trim surrounding the speed control lever to access the Park and Neutral switches. For code 522456.31: Access the linkage at the base of the clutch pedal to reach the clutch pedal position sensor.

  3. Remove and Replace

Disconnect the wiring harness from the faulty switch or sensor. Unbolt the defective component and install the replacement part.

  4. Alignment

If replacing the clutch pedal position sensor (for code 522456.31), ensure the potentiometer is properly indexed to the pedal linkage so that its sweep matches the pedal's physical travel.

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the connectors click securely into place. Reinstall any removed console trim or panels.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use an onboard diagnostic display or a John Deere Service ADVISOR tool to clear the stored PTR codes.

  7. Functional Verification

Test the Park and Neutral positions to ensure the tractor recognizes them correctly without throwing a conflict code. Depress the clutch and shift gears to verify the PTR module registers the clutch pedal transition.
