522456.31

John Deere 522456.31 – PTR: Speed Control Lever Transition Without Using Clutch Pedal

Issue description

The control unit has detected a transition of the Speed Control Lever without the corresponding use of the clutch pedal, which usually indicates a malfunction in the clutch pedal position sensor circuit. The control unit may limit or completely disable the speed control lever functionality to prevent transmission damage.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the rotary position sensor on the clutch pedal for proper physical alignment, cleanliness, and signs of external damage

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the clutch pedal position sensor for loose connections, corrosion, chafed wires, or short circuits

  3. Use a multimeter to test the sensor's circuitry for proper voltage and continuity to ensure there are no open or short circuits

  4. Check for other active diagnostic trouble codes (such as 524173.14) that might isolate the electrical fault

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the battery negative (—) cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Sensor

Remove the center control console cover (or lower dash panels, depending on the exact cab configuration) to access the clutch pedal assembly.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Disconnect the wire connector from the clutch pedal position sensor.

  4. Remove Linkage

Remove the ball stud or linkage rod connecting the pedal to the sensor arm (if applicable).

  5. Remove the Sensor

Remove the mounting screws holding the clutch pedal position sensor in place and remove the faulty unit.

  6. Install the New Sensor

Mount the new sensor, reattach the linkage, and plug in the electrical connector.

  7. Reassemble and Calibrate

Reinstall the console covers and reconnect the battery. You may need to perform a clutch pedal calibration via the tractor's diagnostic monitor or apply a PTR software update (via Service ADVISOR) to clear the code and restore normal operation.
