John Deere 522494.09 – ECU: The Intake Air Temperature Sensor Has A CAN BUS Fault / Intake Air Sensor Communication Error
Issue description
This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicates a data transfer problem between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the Intake Air Sensor. The ECU is unable to receive CAN Bus messages from the sensor, which prevents the system from accurately monitoring the temperature, pressure, and humidity of the turbocharger compressor inlet air. This can impact fueling calculations, potentially resulting in reduced engine performance and increased emissions.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU and the Intake Air Sensor for damaged, frayed, or loose wires
Verify that all connector pins at the sensor and the ECU are secure, fully seated, and free of moisture or corrosion
Use a John Deere Service ADVISOR or compatible diagnostic tool to test the CAN Bus communication between the ECU and the sensor to ensure there are no data transfer interruptions
Check if the sensor is capable of sending data; if wiring is intact but communication is lost, the sensor's internal module has likely failed
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed frayed wires or corroded connectors, repair the wiring harness or replace the damaged connector terminals.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is sound, locate the Intake Air Sensor (typically located in the intake piping prior to the turbocharger). Disconnect the electrical harness, unthread/remove the faulty sensor, and install the new OEM replacement.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to reset the ECU and clear the 522494.09 fault code. Start the engine and monitor the system to ensure the code does not return and that intake air temperature data is actively reading.
