Issue description

The control module has detected that the voltage on the differential lock solenoid circuit is higher than expected. This typically indicates a short circuit to a power source (battery positive) in the wiring harness, a failed solenoid coil, or an internal fault within the control module's driver circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the key switch to the ON position (engine off) and press the differential lock switch to listen for an audible click from the solenoid valve.

  2. Inspect the floor switch or armrest button to ensure it is not physically stuck.

  3. Perform a harness tug test by wiggling the transmission wiring harness near the differential lock solenoid and main chassis ground connections to check for intermittent faults.

  4. Disconnect the harness at the diff lock solenoid and check for voltage on the signal wire with the switch OFF (12V indicates a short to power). Also check the ground wire for continuity to the chassis.

  5. Measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil to determine if it is shorted internally or open.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, engage the park brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the differential lock solenoid valve on the rear axle/transmission housing (refer to your specific model's hydraulic schematic).

  3. Disconnect and Inspect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power (12V on the signal wire when commanded off), trace the harness back to the OIC module. Repair any chafed wires rubbing against the chassis or other powered circuits.

  5. Replace the Solenoid Coil

    Remove the retaining nut and washer at the end of the solenoid valve stem. Slide the faulty electrical coil off the valve cartridge. Slide the new coil onto the cartridge, ensuring the O-rings/seals are seated correctly. Reinstall the washer and retaining nut. Do not overtighten the nut, as this can distort the cartridge.

  6. Module Reset/Update

    If the wiring and solenoid are perfectly intact, the OIC module may have suffered an internal driver fault or require a software flash. Re-program the OIC controllers with the latest software via John Deere Service ADVISOR.

  7. Clear Codes

    Clear the 522497.03 code and test drive the machine, engaging and disengaging the diff lock to verify the repair.
