John Deere 522574.08 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Excessive PM (Particulate Matter) Accumulation / DPF Over-accumulation

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has reached a critical level of soot or ash, restricting exhaust flow. The ECU will typically place the machine into a derate mode (reduced engine power) to prevent catastrophic engine or exhaust damage.

   Check the DPF soot level percentage on the instrument cluster or TechControl display

   Scan the ECU for other active codes (such as differential pressure sensor or EGR faults) that could prevent regeneration

   Verify engine coolant temperature reaches at least 60°C (140°F), as regeneration will not initiate below this threshold

   Visually inspect the DPF differential pressure sensor and its connecting tubes for blockages, melting, or physical damage

   Check primary and secondary engine air filters for restrictions that could increase soot production

   Attempt a Parked Regeneration

   Park the machine in a safe, well-ventilated area away from combustible materials. Set the parking brake, turn off the PTO, and set the engine to low idle. Access the DPF status screen on the display, press and hold the parked regeneration button for 5 seconds to initiate the cycle, and allow it to run completely without interruption (usually 30-45 minutes).

   Perform a Dealer Service Regeneration

   If the soot accumulation is too high, the ECU will lock out the manual parked regeneration. Connect a John Deere Service Advisor tool or a capable aftermarket bi-directional scanner to command a forced Service Regeneration.

   Remove and Clean/Replace the DPF

   If the service regeneration fails or the filter is face-plugged with incombustible ash, physically remove the DPF. Send it to a specialized facility for professional ash cleaning or replace it with a new unit.

   Reset the ECU

   After cleaning or replacing the DPF, use the diagnostic tool to reset the DPF ash/soot timers in the ECU so the system knows a clean filter has been installed.
