John Deere 522581.19 – CCU (Chassis Control Unit): Front-Wheel Drive Switch, Fault
Issue description
A CAN bus communication error triggered when the Chassis Control Unit (CCU) does not receive the status of the Mechanical Front-Wheel Drive (MFWD) switch from the Cab Switch Module (CSM) over the CAN bus network.

Check the cause
Check for Priority Codes: Check the system for any active diagnostic codes in the CSM (Cab Switch Module). CSM diagnostic fault codes take priority over this CCU code.
Inspect the MFWD Switch: Test the physical MFWD switch on the command console/cab switch module for proper mechanical operation and continuity.
Check CAN Bus Wiring: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the CSM and the CCU. Look for loose pins, corrosion, or open/short circuits that would interrupt CAN bus messages.
Verify Voltage: Ensure the control software supply voltage (BAT) to the CCU and CSM is within normal operating range, as voltage drops can cause intermittent CAN message reception.
Repair steps
Address CSM Faults
If any CSM codes are present, diagnose and repair those first. Resolving the CSM issue will often restore the CAN bus broadcast and clear the CCU 522581.19 code automatically.
Clean Connections
Disconnect the wiring harness connectors at both the Cab Switch Module and the Chassis Control Unit. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, check for pushed-back pins, and securely reconnect them.
Test/Replace the Switch
Using a multimeter, test the MFWD switch circuit. If the switch is open or shorted internally, replace the MFWD switch (or the entire Cab Switch Module if the switch is integrated and non-serviceable).
Repair Wiring
If the switch tests good but communication is still lost, trace the CAN bus lines between the CSM and CCU. Repair or replace any damaged sections of the wiring harness.
Clear and Verify
Clear the fault codes from the CCU and CSM. Cycle the tractor's key, engage and disengage the MFWD switch, and verify that the front-wheel drive engages properly without the code returning.
