John Deere 522581.31 – CCU (Chassis Control Unit): MFWD Switch Open Circuit

The CSM control software has detected an open circuit in the MFWD switch. Because the CSM cannot read the switch state, it transmits a replacement/default value over the CAN bus to the CCU. The CCU receives this error state and logs the 522581.31 code.

   Access the CommandCenter display and check for active codes under the CSM (Cab Switch Module). The CSM code will pinpoint the exact circuit failure and takes priority over the CCU code.

   Physically inspect the Front-Wheel Drive engagement switch on the cab console/CommandARM for damage, sticking, or liquid spills.

   Test the wiring harness between the MFWD switch and the CSM for an open circuit, backed-out pins, or corrosion.

   Check the CAN bus communication wiring between the CSM and the CCU for loose connections, though an open circuit at the switch is the primary trigger for the .31 FMI.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect battery power to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Switch

   Remove the trim panels on the CommandARM or side console to access the underside of the Cab Switch Module (CSM) and the MFWD switch.

   Test the Switch

   Disconnect the MFWD switch and use a multimeter to perform a continuity test across its terminals while toggling it. If the switch shows an open circuit internally when engaged, it has failed and must be replaced.

   Test the Harness

   If the switch tests good, perform a continuity test on the wiring harness from the switch connector to the CSM connector. Repair any broken wires or re-pin any loose connectors.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect all components, restore battery power, and turn the key on. Clear the stored codes in both the CSM and CCU.

   Verify Repair

   Cycle the MFWD switch several times and drive the tractor to ensure front-wheel drive engages and the code does not return.
