Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness between the Steering Control Unit (XSC/XSA/TSB) and the steering valve for chafed wires, rodent damage, or breaks.
Disconnect the harness at the steering valve and the control unit to inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-back terminals, or moisture.
Use a multimeter to check the continuity of the ground wire for Valve 1 from the control unit connector to the valve connector.
Measure the resistance across the steering valve coil to ensure it is not internally open.
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
With the engine off, turn the steering wheel in both directions several times to relieve trapped hydraulic pressure in the steering circuit.
Locate the Valve
Remove side shields or panels as necessary. On many 8R models, the steering priority valve block is located near the transmission oil filters.
Disconnect Hydraulics & Electrical
Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty valve. Mark and disconnect the hydraulic lines, being prepared to catch residual oil.
Remove and Replace
Remove the mounting bolts securing the valve. Install the new valve assembly, ensuring all O-rings on the hydraulic fittings are replaced and seated correctly.
Bleed the System
Start the engine and cycle the steering wheel a minimum of six complete turns from lock-to-lock to bleed air from the hydraulic system.
Verify
Check for hydraulic leaks and clear the diagnostic fault codes using a John Deere service tool.
