522845.18

John Deere 522845.18 – XMC / XMA: Steering Control Valve, Current Too Low

Issue description

The electrical current in the return line of the steering control valve for the right-hand steering solenoid has dropped below the acceptable threshold, typically pointing to a short to ground or an open circuit that impairs valve function and limits or disables AutoTrac/steering control software functions.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the XMC/XMA module to the steering control valve for physical breaks, chafing, or pinched wires.

  2. Disconnect and inspect the electrical connectors at the steering control valve and the module for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the steer right solenoid circuit, specifically testing the return line for a short to ground or an open circuit.

  4. Measure the resistance across the steer right solenoid pins to determine if the internal coil has failed (open or shorted).

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a short to ground or broken wire in the harness, repair or replace the affected wiring section.

  2. Replace Solenoid/Valve

If the wiring and connections are intact but the solenoid fails the resistance test, the steering control valve solenoid (or the entire steering control valve block, depending on the model's serviceability) must be replaced.

  3. Reprogram/Calibrate

After replacing the valve or repairing the circuit, clear the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) via the CommandCenter or service tool.

  4. Test

Engage the AutoTrac system and perform a steering calibration procedure to ensure the new valve responds correctly to XMC commands.
