John Deere 522846.03 – XMC: Steering Control Valve, Voltage Too High

Issue description

The control software registers that the voltage at the steering control valve (steer right) is too high. This condition indicates a short to a 12V power source at either the supply or return line of the steering control valve.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110M
  • 6120M
  • 6130M
  • 6145M
  • 6155M
  • 6175M
  • 6195M
  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 8225R
  • 8245R
  • 8270R
  • 8295R

  • 8335R
  • 8345R
  • 8370R
  • 8400R
  • 8310RT
  • 8335RT
  • 8360RT

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connected to the steering control valve (specifically the steer right solenoid circuit) for any signs of pinched wires, melted insulation, or chafing that could cause a short to a 12V voltage source.

  2. Ensure all electrical connections at the XMC module and the steering control valve are secure, dry, and free from corrosion.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the supply and return lines of the right steering control valve. Check for unwanted 12V voltage on the circuit when it should be unpowered.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during repair.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a short to voltage in the harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  3. Clean Connections

Clean any corroded pins and tighten loose connections at the steering control valve and the XMC module.

  4. Replace Faulty Component

If the wiring is intact but the internal solenoid of the steering control valve is shorted, replace the steering control valve assembly.

  5. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery, clear the diagnostic trouble codes using a John Deere diagnostic tool, and perform any necessary steering calibrations before returning the machine to service.
