John Deere 522846.06 – XMC: Steering Control Valve, Current Too High

The control software has registered that the electrical current at the steering control valve (specifically the steer right solenoid) is excessively high. This indicates a short to ground at either the supply or return line of the steering control valve, which can impair steering performance and cause the control software to limit or disable AutoTrac™ functions.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness connected to the steering control valve (steer right solenoid) for any signs of a short to ground, such as chafed insulation, exposed wires touching grounded metal surfaces, or pinched harnesses.

   Ensure all electrical connectors at the steering control valve and the XMC module are secure, fully seated, and free from moisture, dirt, or corrosion.

   Use a digital multimeter to measure the current in the supply line of the steering control valve and test the continuity of the circuit to ground to isolate whether the short is in the wiring harness or internal to the solenoid coil.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed chafed or exposed wires, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the connector pigtail. Ensure the repaired harness is routed away from sharp metal edges or high-heat areas.

   Replace the Solenoid/Valve (If Applicable)

   If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine and the short to ground is isolated to the internal coil of the steer right solenoid, replace the solenoid or the entire steering control valve assembly.

   Reassemble and Reconnect

   Reconnect all electrical connections and restore battery power.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Use a John Deere diagnostic tool (Service ADVISOR) to clear the 522846.06 fault code. Depending on the repair, perform a steering valve calibration procedure to ensure the XMC module is synchronized with the new valve/solenoid.

   Test Operation

   Test the AutoTrac™ system and manual steering in both directions to verify the current levels are normal and the fault does not return.
