John Deere 522847.16 – XMC: Steering Control Valve, Current Too High

Issue description

The control software has registered abnormally high current in the return line of the steering control valve's left-steer solenoid, indicating a short to a 12V voltage source or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the XMC/XMA module to the steering control valve for rubbed-through insulation, pinched wires, or melted areas that could cause the steer-left circuit to short to a 12V power source.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the steer left solenoid and at the XMC module. Check for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge circuits.

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the steer left solenoid. Compare the reading to the OEM specification. A reading of near zero ohms indicates the solenoid coil is internally shorted.

  4. With the key ON (engine off) and the solenoid disconnected, probe the harness connector to ensure it is not receiving constant 12V power when the steering command is inactive.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts or steering actuation.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the AutoTrac™ / ActiveCommand Steering control valve block (location varies by model, often mounted near the front axle, under the cab, or along the frame rail).

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to voltage in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire using weather-sealed splice connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace the Solenoid/Valve

    If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut/screws holding the steer left solenoid to the valve block. Note: On some John Deere steering valves, the solenoids are not serviced separately, and the entire proportional steering control valve assembly must be replaced.

  5. Reassembly

    Install the new solenoid or valve block. Torque all hydraulic fittings and solenoid retaining nuts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  6. Calibration and Clearing

    Reconnect the battery. Use a John Deere diagnostic monitor (Service ADVISOR™) to clear the 522847.16 fault code. You may need to perform a steering valve calibration procedure via the cab monitor before the AutoTrac™ system will re-engage.

  7. Test

    Start the machine, check for hydraulic leaks, and test the steering system manually and via AutoTrac™ to ensure the code does not return.
