John Deere 522848.03 – XMC: Steering Control Valve, Voltage Too High

The control software registers that the voltage at the steering control valve (specifically the steer left solenoid) is too high, indicating a short to a 12V power source at either the supply or return line. This causes the control software to limit or disable certain AutoTrac™ or ActiveCommand steering functions.

   Inspect the wiring harness connected to the steering control valve (specifically the left steer solenoid) for any signs of breaks, chafing, or melted insulation that could cause a short to voltage.

   Use a multimeter to test the supply and return lines of the steering control valve for a short to a 12V source.

   Ensure all electrical connectors at the XMC module and the steering control valve are secure, fully seated, and free from moisture or corrosion.

   Verify the continuity of the circuit from the XMC controller to the valve to ensure the wiring is intact.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Repair Wiring

   If a short to 12V is found in the harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

   Clean Connections

   Clean any corroded pins on the connectors and tighten them as needed.

   Replace the Solenoid/Valve

   If the wiring tests perfectly but the short is internal to the solenoid, replace the faulty steering control valve or the specific steer left solenoid with a manufacturer-approved OEM part.

   Reprogram/Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery. Use the John Deere Service ADVISOR tool to clear the diagnostic trouble codes. Depending on the repair, you may need to run a steering valve calibration procedure.
