John Deere 522848.06 – XMC: Steering Control Valve, Current Too High / Steer Left Solenoid Short To Ground

The control software has registered an abnormally high electrical current at the steering control valve (specifically the steer left solenoid). This typically suggests a short to ground at either the supply or return line of the steering control valve, which can impair the valve's ability to function properly and affect the machine's AutoTrac™ or ActiveCommand steering performance.

   Inspect the electrical connectors at the steering control valve for any signs of damage, loose pins, moisture, or corrosion.

   Inspect the wiring harness connected to the steering control valve (steer left solenoid circuit) for any signs of a short to ground, such as chafed or exposed wires touching grounded metal chassis surfaces.

   Use a multimeter or John Deere Service ADVISOR™ diagnostic tools to measure the current in the supply line of the steering control valve to verify if it is spiking outside the specified range.

   Isolate the Short

   Disconnect the harness from the steering control valve. Test the harness side for continuity to ground. If a short is found in the harness, repair or replace the damaged wiring section.

   Test the Solenoid

   If the wiring harness tests fine, the internal coil of the steer left solenoid on the steering control valve is likely shorted.

   Replace the Valve/Solenoid

   Replace the faulty steering control valve (or the specific solenoid, depending on the valve block's modularity) with a genuine OEM part.

   Reprogram / Calibrate

   Reconnect all components. Use the Service ADVISOR™ tool to clear the XMC diagnostic trouble codes.

   Perform Steering Calibration

   After replacing steering components, you must execute the steering valve calibration and wheel angle sensor calibration procedures to ensure proper AutoTrac™ functionality.
