John Deere 522848.16 – XMC (Steering System Control Unit) / XMA: Steering Control Valve Left Amps High

The electrical current in the supply line to the left steering control valve solenoid is excessively high, which almost always suggests a short to ground. This condition causes the control software to limit or disable certain AutoTrac™ or ActiveCommand steering functions.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the steering control valve for any signs of physical damage, loose pins, or corrosion.

   Carefully inspect the wiring harness leading from the XMC controller to the steering valve for chafed insulation or exposed wires touching grounded metal surfaces.

   Use a multimeter or John Deere diagnostic tools to measure the current in the supply line of the steering control valve to verify out-of-spec amperage.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks reveal chafed wires or corroded connectors causing a short to ground, repair or replace the affected section of the wiring harness.

   Replace the Valve/Solenoid

   If the wiring is intact and tests fine, the internal coil of the left steering control valve solenoid is likely shorted. Replace the faulty steering control valve (or the specific solenoid, depending on the valve block design) with an OEM part.

   Clear Codes

   Cycle the tractor's key switch or use the CommandCenter™ / Service Advisor tool to clear the diagnostic trouble codes.

   Recalibrate the System

   If the steering control valve was replaced, put the system into technical mode and perform an Autopilot calibration. This includes calibrating the Wheel Angle Sensors (WAS) and the new Steering Valve on flat, smooth, and hard ground.
