John Deere 523696.09 – SCC (SCV CAN Controller / Rear Chassis Controller): CAN BUS Message Rate Fault / Missing External Control Message for 1 Second

Issue description

The controller has lost communication with an external control lever on the CAN bus network.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the power by restarting the engine/vehicle to see if the CAN communication fault resets.

  2. Inspect implement connections for loose pins or debris if connected to an implement using external SCV or front hitch controls.

  3. Check power supply around batteries and alternator for damage, loose grounds, or debris causing voltage drops.

  4. Inspect hydraulic system and controller fuses (commonly F12, F24, and F51) to ensure the SCC/SCO is receiving proper voltage.

  5. Cycle the SCV VI or front hitch external switch through all positions to test if the controller recognizes the input.

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Verify

Acknowledge the code on the CommandCenter display and restart the tractor. If the code does not return, it was a temporary CAN bus interruption.

  2. Harness Inspection

If the code remains active, locate the wiring harness connecting the SCC (Rear Chassis Controller) to the SCV VI external control lever or Front Hitch control lever.

  3. Check for Continuity

Disconnect the harness at both the lever and the SCC. Use a multimeter to check for continuity on the CAN High and CAN Low wires. Look for chafing, pinched wires, or corrosion in the connectors.

  4. Repair Wiring

If an open or short circuit is found in the CAN bus wiring, repair or replace the affected harness section.

  5. Component Replacement

If the wiring is intact and the fuses are good, the fault lies within either the external control lever or the SCC controller board itself. Replace the faulty control lever first as it is the most common point of failure for this specific code.

  6. Dealer Calibration

If the SCC controller or SCV valve sections are replaced, a John Deere dealer must use Service ADVISOR to download the correct payload and reconfigure the SCC addresses (e.g., SV1 through SV6) so the tractor recognizes the new modules.
