John Deere 523749.31 – RPT or BCU: Rear PTO Speed Slippage High / Rear PTO Load Too High

The controller detects that the rear PTO slip is too high (the PTO speed sensor is reading a speed significantly lower than the commanded output speed). This condition forces the PTO to shut down to prevent damage to the clutch packs.

   Disconnect the implement and turn the PTO off and on again, running it without a load to see if the code returns (checks for implement binding or high mechanical load)

   Check the condition and level of the hydraulic/transmission oil (dirty, burnt, or low fluid can cause the PTO clutch to slip)

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear PTO speed sensor for chafing, breaks, or loose connections

   Remove the speed sensor and inspect the internal tone wheel for damage or debris

   Test the rear PTO solenoid valve for proper resistance and ensure it is receiving the correct voltage from the RPT/BCU when the PTO switch is engaged

   Relieve Pressure & Clean

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic pressure. Clean the area around the PTO housing to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

   Fluid Service

   If the hydraulic oil is dirty or degraded, drain the system and replace the hydraulic filters. Refill only with approved John Deere HY-GARD fluid (Do NOT use Low Viscosity or Bio-Hy-Gard for these specific heavy-duty PTO applications unless specified by your exact manual).

   Replace the PTO Speed Sensor

   If the sensor or tone wheel signal is lost, unbolt the old speed sensor from the PTO housing. Install the new sensor, ensuring it is seated correctly, and plug in the electrical connector.

   Replace the PTO Solenoid Valve

   If the sensor is reading correctly but the clutch is physically slipping due to low pressure, locate the PTO solenoid valve on the valve body. Remove the retaining bolts, extract the old solenoid and spool, and install the new solenoid assembly. Torque to factory specifications.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Turn the tractor on, clear the stored BCU/RPT 523749.31 codes via the monitor, and engage the rear PTO to verify the repair.
