523789.05

John Deere 523789.05 – XSC (Steering Module / Steering Control Unit): Wheel Angle Sensor, Open Circuit

Issue description

The control software registers that the voltage at the output of the wheel angle sensor is too high, indicating an open circuit such as a broken wire, a disconnected plug, or an internal failure within the sensor itself. This results in limited or no steering functionality.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wheel angle sensor physically for any signs of external damage, wear, or improper installation

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the wheel angle sensor for damage, corrosion, broken wires inside the insulation, or loose connections

  3. Use a multimeter or diagnostic tool to test the continuity and integrity of the sensor circuit to identify any open circuits or high resistance points

  4. Use John Deere diagnostic software to monitor the voltage levels at the sensor output in real-time to see if it deviates from the normal operating range

Repair steps

  1. Reconnect or repair wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a disconnected plug or a broken wire in the harness, reconnect the sensor or repair/replace the damaged wiring harness section.

  2. Replace the sensor

If the wiring is intact but the sensor fails the voltage/continuity tests, remove the faulty wheel angle sensor and install a new OEM replacement.

  3. Update control software

Check for and install any available updates for the XSC control software to address potential bugs or signal processing issues.

  4. Calibrate the steering angle sensor

After replacing the sensor or repairing the circuit, you must perform a steering angle sensor calibration procedure using the diagnostic tool. Ensure the vehicle is stationary during this process.
