John Deere 523811.12 – RPT / BCU / PAP: Current Detected When Y73 Solenoid for PTO Speed 1 is Off

The control module is detecting electrical current flowing to the Y73 Solenoid (PTO Speed 1) even when the system has commanded the solenoid to be turned OFF. This typically indicates a short-to-power in the wiring harness, a stuck/faulty solenoid, or an internal fault within the control module itself. When this error is detected, the functionality of the rear PTO is significantly limited or entirely disabled as a safety precaution.

   Inspect the Solenoid Circuit: Physically check the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Y73 PTO Speed 1 solenoid. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or signs of a short-to-power.

   Test Solenoid Operation: Disconnect the solenoid and use a multimeter to check its internal resistance. Check for continuity between the solenoid power circuit and the tractor chassis/ground.

   Verify Voltage Levels: Measure the voltage at the solenoid connector while the PTO is commanded OFF. If voltage is present, the wiring harness is shorted to another power source, or the RPT/BCU module is internally shorted and leaking voltage.

   Check Software Versions: Verify that the PAP/RPT control software is updated to the latest version, as John Deere occasionally releases patches that address overly sensitive circuit fault logic.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental shorts during repair.

   Locate the Y73 Solenoid

   Locate the PTO valve block at the rear of the chassis. Identify the Y73 solenoid (Speed 1).

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the harness, repair or splice the damaged wires and replace any corroded connectors.

   Replace the Solenoid (If Faulty)

   If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the multimeter test (or is physically overheating), remove the retaining nut/bolt holding the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge. Slide the old coil off and install the new one. (If the cartridge itself is stuck, replace the entire solenoid valve assembly).

   Reconnect the wiring harness and battery. Clear the RPT/BCU fault codes using a diagnostic tool.
