John Deere 523811 – RPT or BCU: Rear PTO Speed 1 Solenoid Overload Cut-Out

The controller measures a total current above 40 Amps at the outputs to the solenoids for the PTO speeds. This indicates a short to ground or a defective component (such as a shorted internal coil) in the monitored circuit for the Y73 Solenoid (PTO Speed 1). When this error is detected, the functionality of the rear PTO is significantly limited or entirely disabled to prevent damage to the system.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Y73 PTO Speed 1 solenoid for rubbed-through wire insulation, pinched wires, or signs of a short to ground

   Use a multimeter to check the resistance (ohms) of the PTO solenoid coil (a reading of near-zero ohms indicates an internally shorted solenoid)

   Measure the current levels at the outputs to ensure they are not exceeding the 40A threshold

   Verify that the PAP (Power Accessory Point) or BCU control software is updated to the latest version

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the harness, repair or splice the damaged wires and replace any corroded connectors.

   Replace the Solenoid

   If the wiring is intact but the Y73 solenoid is drawing excessive current (internally shorted), locate the rear PTO valve block. Disconnect the electrical connector from the PTO Speed 1 solenoid. Unthread the faulty solenoid valve from the manifold and install the replacement part.

   Reassemble and Test

   Reconnect the electrical harness, reconnect the battery, and clear the fault codes. Run the tractor and engage the rear PTO to verify that the current draw is within specification and the code does not return.

   Software Update

   If the code persists despite healthy wiring and a new solenoid, have a John Deere dealer flash the latest software patch to the RPT/BCU.
