523812.05

John Deere 523812.05 – RPT / BCU: Rear PTO Speed 2 Solenoid Low Amp Draw

Issue description

The control software measures a current of less than 500 mA at the output to the PTO Speed 2 solenoid (Y74 solenoid) when commanded on, indicating an open circuit. When this error is detected, the functionality of the rear PTO is significantly limited or entirely non-functional.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 6230
  • 6330
  • 6430

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring and connectors associated with the Y74 solenoid (specifically lead 7106) for signs of an open circuit, worn insulation, or disconnected terminals.

  2. Use a multimeter and diagnostic tools to measure the current levels at the solenoid for PTO speed 2. Ensure the current is above the 500 mA threshold when the solenoid is activated.

  3. Test the circuit for continuity to locate the exact point of the open circuit.

  4. Test the Y74 solenoid itself for proper resistance and operation to ensure it is capable of drawing adequate current.

  5. Ensure that the PAP control software is updated to the latest version, as patches may address current regulation issues.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Locate the Y74 Solenoid

Locate the Rear PTO Speed 2 solenoid (Y74) on the rear chassis/PTO valve block.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or damaged connector on lead 7106, repair or replace the affected wiring harness section.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

If the wiring is intact but the solenoid has failed internally (causing the open circuit/low amp draw), remove the faulty Y74 solenoid cartridge and install a new OEM replacement.

  5. Reassemble and Reconnect

Reconnect the wiring harness to the solenoid and reconnect the battery.

  6. Reset and Test

Clear the 523812.05 fault code from the RPT/BCU module. Engage the PTO Speed 2 to test the system and verify that the current remains within safe operational limits (above 500 mA) and the code does not return.
