John Deere 523812.11 – Rear Chassis (RPT): Rear PTO Speed 2 Solenoid Issue

An electrical actuation fault, overload cut-out, or short circuit in the solenoid valve responsible for engaging the Rear PTO Speed 2 hydraulic circuit, causing the tractor to lose the electronic control necessary to translate cab switch commands into the hydraulic action that engages the PTO.

   Check Power and Ground: Verify the solenoid is actually faulty by checking for power and ground at the connector when the PTO switch is activated in the cab.

   Inspect the ELX Relay: Check the PTO electrical circuit's ELX relay. A bad relay can prevent power from reaching the solenoid, mimicking a solenoid failure.

   Test Solenoid Resistance: Use a multimeter to check the ohms on the PTO solenoid to determine if the internal coil is shorted or open.

   Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Clean the electrical connections thoroughly. Partial connections, dirt, or corrosion at the harness connector can cause intermittent faults and erratic PTO operation.

   Locate the Solenoid

   The Rear PTO solenoid valve is typically located on the hydraulic valve block near the rear transmission housing. Allow extra time for access if working in tight quarters.

   Disconnect Electricals

   Unplug the wiring harness connector from the faulty PTO solenoid.

   Remove the Valve

   Remove the retaining nut or clamp holding the solenoid in place. Extract the cartridge valve from the hydraulic block.

   Install the New Valve

   Insert the new solenoid valve into the block (ensure any O-rings are lubricated with clean transmission/hydraulic oil) and secure it with the clamp/nut.

   Reconnect and Verify

   Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks fully into place to prevent future intermittent issues.

   Test Run

   Start the tractor and perform a test run of the PTO to verify proper engagement and ensure the fault code has cleared.
