John Deere 523813.04 – RPT (Rear Chassis Module) or BCU (Basic Control Unit): Rear PTO Speed 1 Solenoid High Amp Draw
Issue description
The control module detects an abnormally high current draw (exceeding 30 amps in lead 7063) on the circuit for the Rear PTO Speed 1 Solenoid (Y73) when it is activated, typically indicating a short circuit to ground within the wiring harness or a shorted internal coil inside the solenoid.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the RPT/BCU module and the Y73 PTO Speed 1 Solenoid (specifically lead 7063) for chafing, melting, or exposed wires causing a short to ground.
Disconnect the Y73 solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across its coil to check for an internal short (near zero resistance indicates a short).
Use a diagnostic tool or ammeter to measure the current levels at the solenoid when PTO Speed 1 is commanded on to verify if the draw spikes above the 30-amp threshold.
Verify the condition of the power supply, related fuses, and the PC5 power module outputs to ensure no secondary power supply faults are present.
Repair steps
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring or a melted connector on lead 7063, splice in a new connector or repair the harness to eliminate the short circuit.
Replace the Solenoid
If the wiring is intact but the Y73 solenoid fails the resistance test (internal short), remove the faulty PTO Speed 1 Solenoid valve from the rear PTO valve block and install a new OEM replacement.
Software Update
Ensure the PAP control software / RPT module is updated to the latest version, as some current regulation issues are addressed via software patches.
Clear and Verify
Clear the 523813.04 fault code using a diagnostic tool. Engage the rear PTO to verify that the system operates normally and the current draw remains within the specified range.
