John Deere 523813.05 – RPT / BCU: Rear PTO Speed 1 Solenoid Low Amp Draw
Issue description
The control software measures a current of less than 500 mA at the output to the PTO Speed 1 solenoid (Y73) while commanded ON, indicating an open circuit or failed internal coil.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Y73 PTO Speed 1 solenoid (specifically lead 7063) for chafing, breaks, or loose pins.
Disconnect the solenoid and use a multimeter to verify that the connector is receiving a 12V supply from the RPT or BCU when the PTO is switched on.
Measure the resistance across the pins of the PTO Speed 1 solenoid (Y73). A healthy coil should show around 5 Ohms; an out of limits (OL) reading means the internal coil is open and dead.
Use diagnostic tools or a multimeter in series to measure the current levels at the solenoid, ensuring it draws more than 500 mA.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector in the harness leading to the rear chassis, splice and seal the damaged wire or replace the connector pigtail.
Locate PTO Valve Block
If the wiring is intact but the Y73 solenoid failed the resistance test, locate the PTO valve block on the rear chassis.
Clean Area
Clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Remove Faulty Solenoid
Unbolt and remove the faulty PTO Speed 1 solenoid valve assembly.
Install New Solenoid
Install the new solenoid valve, ensuring the O-rings/seals are properly seated to prevent hydraulic leaks.
Reconnect Harness
Reconnect the electrical harness.
Software Update
Ensure the PAP control software is updated to the latest version, as some patches address current regulation sensitivities.
Clear Codes and Test
Clear the fault codes via the CommandCenter or diagnostic tool and test PTO engagement.
