John Deere 523813.19 – BCU: Rear PTO Speed 1 Solenoid Issue / Incorrect CAN BUS Message for Y73 Solenoid, PTO Speed 1

The control module is receiving an incorrect CAN BUS message or detecting a communication fault regarding the Y73 Solenoid (which controls Rear PTO Speed 1). The system flags this when the Basic Control Unit (BCU) or Rear Chassis module (RPT) cannot properly communicate with Power Module PC5 regarding the actuation state of the PTO Speed 1 solenoid.

   Check CAN BUS Communication: Verify the CAN wiring between the BCU and Power Module PC5 for rubbed through wires, corrosion at the module pins, or loose connectors.

   Inspect the Y73 Solenoid Harness: Locate the Y73 Solenoid on the rear PTO valve block, disconnect the harness, and check for moisture, dirt, or bent pins inside the connector.

   Test Solenoid Resistance (Ohm Test): Using a multimeter, check the resistance across the pins of the Y73 solenoid coil. If it reads open (infinite resistance) or shorted (zero resistance), the solenoid coil has failed internally.

   Check Power Supply: Verify that Power Module PC5 is outputting the correct voltage to the solenoid when PTO Speed 1 is commanded on.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Locate the Valve Block

   Access the rear PTO hydraulic valve block at the rear chassis. Identify the Y73 solenoid (refer to the hydraulic schematic if your machine has multiple speeds, as Y74 is Speed 2 and Y75 is Speed 3).

   Remove the Faulty Solenoid

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the Y73 solenoid. Remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem, and slide the coil off. If the cartridge valve itself is sticking, unthread the cartridge from the valve block (have a catch pan ready for hydraulic fluid).

   Install the New Solenoid

   Thread the new PTO solenoid valve cartridge into the block and torque to OEM specifications. Slide the new coil over the stem and secure it with the retaining nut.

   Reconnect and Reassemble

   Plug the electrical harness back into the solenoid. Ensure the connector clicks and locks securely.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery. Use a John Deere Service ADVISOR tool (or in-cab diagnostic menu) to clear the 523813.19 fault code. Start the tractor and engage PTO Speed 1 to verify proper operation and ensure the code does not return.
