John Deere 523814.01 – RPT (Rear Chassis / Rear PTO) or BCU (Basic Control Unit): Rear PTO Speed 2 Solenoid Voltage Issue

Triggered when the system detects a voltage irregularity (power supply interruption, low voltage, or a short to ground) on the circuit (lead 7106) that powers the Y74 Solenoid, which is responsible for engaging PTO Speed 2. The power module initiates an overload protection feature and shuts down the affected circuit, preventing the PTO from engaging.

   Check the mini fuses located near the ECU that supply power to the PC5 module (fuses F02 PLB/01 and 02).

   Inspect the wiring harness (lead 7106) between the PC5 Power Module and the Y74 solenoid for worn insulation, exposed wires, or disconnected plugs.

   Test the resistance of the Y74 solenoid with a multimeter and check for cracked magnets inside the PTO housing.

   Verify that the PC5 module itself is receiving proper voltage and outputting correctly.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery before servicing electrical components.

   Fuse Replacement

   If the PC5 power supply fuses are blown, replace them with the correct amperage mini fuses. Re-test the system.

   Harness Repair

   If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring on lead 7106, repair or splice the affected section of the harness, ensuring all connections are weather-sealed.

   Solenoid Replacement

   If the multimeter test shows the Y74 solenoid is shorted, has infinite resistance (open), or if physical inspection reveals cracked magnets in the PTO housing: Drain the necessary hydraulic/transmission fluid, remove the PTO housing to access the internal solenoids, remove the faulty Y74 (PTO Speed 2) solenoid and install the replacement, then reinstall the PTO housing and refill fluids to the specified levels.

   Module Replacement

   If the wiring and solenoid are perfectly intact and within resistance specs, the PC5 Power Module has likely failed internally and must be replaced.

   Clear and Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery, clear the stored BCU/RPT fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and test the PTO engagement to ensure the issue is resolved.
