523814.03

John Deere 523814.03 – Rear Chassis (RPT): Rear PTO Speed 2 Solenoid Voltage Issue / Solenoid for PTO Speed 2 On, Voltage Too High at PAP Control Software

Issue description

This code indicates that the voltage is too high or there is an open circuit detected in the ground lead of the rear PTO solenoid valve. When this error is detected, the functionality of the rear PTO is typically restricted or disabled.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 8245R
  • 8400R
  • 8310RT
  • 8335RT
  • 8360RT

Check the cause

  1. Inspect Solenoid Valve Wiring: Visually and physically check the wiring harness and connectors leading to the rear PTO solenoid valve. Look specifically for signs of an open circuit, chafing, or damaged pins in the ground lead.

  2. Test Current and Voltage Levels: Use a multimeter or John Deere diagnostic software to measure the voltage and current levels at the solenoid for PTO speed 2. Ensure the current is within the specified range when the solenoid is commanded on.

  3. Verify Solenoid Operation: Bench-test or actively command the solenoid to ensure it operates mechanically and electrically when receiving adequate current.

  4. Check Software Versions: Verify that the RPT control software is updated to the latest version, as software patches are sometimes released to address current regulation and false voltage spikes.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed an open circuit or damaged connector in the ground lead, splice in new wiring or replace the damaged connector housing/pins.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance/current test, locate the Rear PTO Solenoid Valve block. Remove the retaining nut/clip holding the solenoid coil, slide the old solenoid off the valve stem, and install the new replacement solenoid.

  4. Update Software

If a software issue is suspected, have a John Deere dealer flash the RPT module with the latest software payload.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the RPT 523814.03 code using a diagnostic tool, and engage the Rear PTO Speed 2 to verify the repair.
