523814.04

John Deere 523814.04 – RPT (Rear Chassis / Rear PTO Control Unit) or BCU (Basic Control Unit): Rear PTO Speed 2 Solenoid High Amp Draw

Issue description

The system's power module detects that the current draw for the Y74 Solenoid (PTO Speed 2) is too high when activated, indicating a short to ground within the circuit or an internally shorted solenoid.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R
  • 6195R
  • 6215R
  • 6230
  • 6330
  • 6430

Check the cause

  1. Inspect wiring and connectors associated with the Y74 solenoid (specifically lead 7106) for damage, worn insulation, or exposed wires

  2. Use a multimeter to test the circuit for continuity and identify any short to ground where wiring may be rubbing against the chassis

  3. Disconnect the Y74 solenoid and test its internal resistance to check for an internal short

  4. Ensure the power module (PC5) is functioning correctly and is not the source of the fault

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and cycle the key switch to ensure the system is de-energized.

  2. Locate the Component

Locate the Y74 Solenoid (PTO Speed 2) on the rear PTO valve block.

  3. Harness Repair

If the multimeter test revealed a short to ground in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire (e.g., lead 7106) using appropriate weather-sealed connectors and heat shrink, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Solenoid Replacement

If the wiring tests good but the solenoid fails the resistance check, remove the faulty Y74 solenoid from the valve block and install a new OEM replacement.

  5. Reset and Test

After repairs are made, cycle the tractor power to reset the associated fault codes, then engage the rear PTO to test the system and ensure that the current remains within safe operational limits.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Y74 Solenoid for PTO Speed 2

Ensure you are replacing the "Speed 2" solenoid (Y74), as the PTO block also contains the Y73 (Speed 1) and Y75 (Speed 3) solenoids.
