John Deere 523814.05 – Rear Chassis (RPT) or BCU (Basic Control Unit): Rear PTO Speed 2 Solenoid Low Amp Draw
Issue description
The control module commands the Rear PTO Speed 2 solenoid (Y74) to turn ON, but it detects an abnormally low current draw or no current at all. This typically indicates an open circuit, a disconnected wiring harness, or a failed/burnt-out solenoid coil.

Check the cause
Inspect wiring harness and connectors associated with the Y74 solenoid (lead 7106 on BCU models) for disconnected plugs, worn insulation, broken wires, or corrosion.
Test for open circuit/continuity between the control module (RPT or BCU/PC5) and the solenoid plug using a multimeter.
Measure the resistance of the Y74 PTO Speed 2 solenoid coil to check for an internal open circuit (infinite resistance).
Check the RPT or Power Module PC5 output voltage when PTO Speed 2 is commanded on.
Repair steps
Prepare machine
Safely park the machine on level ground, turn off the engine, and remove the key.
Locate solenoid
Locate the Rear PTO Speed 2 solenoid (Y74) on the rear chassis PTO valve block.
Disconnect and clean connector
Disconnect the electrical connector to the solenoid. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner if dirt or corrosion is present.
Repair wiring harness
If the wiring harness is damaged (causing the open circuit), splice and repair the affected section of the harness using OEM-approved weather-sealed connectors.
Remove retaining nut
If the solenoid coil itself failed the multimeter test, remove the retaining nut/fastener at the end of the solenoid stem.
Remove old coil
Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge.
Install new coil
Slide the new PTO solenoid (Y74) onto the stem and torque the retaining nut to OEM specifications.
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid.
Clear fault codes
Clear the fault codes from the RPT or BCU module using a diagnostic scan tool or the tractor's CommandCenter display.
Verify repair
Start the tractor and engage PTO Speed 2 to verify the repair and ensure the code does not return.
