John Deere 523814.11 – Rear Chassis (RPT): Rear PTO Speed 2 Solenoid Issue

This code indicates a circuit fault (such as an open circuit, short to ground, or abnormal resistance) in the electrical circuit controlling the solenoid responsible for engaging the Rear PTO's second speed setting.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear PTO valve block. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or damaged connectors.

   Connector Check: Disconnect the harness at the PTO Speed 2 solenoid. Check for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.

   Coil Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the PTO Speed 2 solenoid. An open reading (infinite ohms) or a dead short indicates a failed solenoid coil.

   Harness Continuity: Check the continuity of the wiring from the solenoid connector back to the RPT controller to ensure there are no breaks in the line.

   Voltage Supply Test: With the tractor running and PTO Speed 2 commanded (safely, following standard shop procedures), verify that the RPT controller is sending the correct voltage to the solenoid connector.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the PTO control valve block on the rear chassis/PTO housing. Identify the specific solenoid for PTO Speed 2.

   Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid valve with brake cleaner or compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

   Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid.
