John Deere 523814.12 – BCU (Basic Control Unit) or RPT (Rear PTO / Rear Chassis): Rear PTO Speed 2 Solenoid Issue / Solenoid for PTO Speed 2 Off, Current Present at Power Module PC5

This code is triggered when the Power Module (PC5) detects a current (typically exceeding 1 amp) in the circuit (lead 7106) for the Y74 Solenoid (PTO Speed 2) even though the solenoid is commanded to be OFF. This indicates a short to power in the wiring harness, a failed solenoid, or an internal fault within the Power Module PC5 itself.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the Y74 solenoid (specifically lead 7106) and the Power Module PC5 for melted insulation, chafed wires, or exposed copper.

   Use a multimeter to test the circuit for voltage when the PTO is switched off to identify a short to power in the harness or module.

   Disconnect the Y74 solenoid and check its internal resistance to ensure it hasn't failed internally and caused a feedback loop.

   If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine and has no shorts to power, check the Power Module PC5 for an internal fault (stuck closed circuitry).

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the Y74 PTO Speed 2 Solenoid on the rear PTO valve block and the Power Module PC5.

   If the module is internally shorted, disconnect its harness connectors, unbolt the module, and install the replacement. (Note: A new BCU/Power Module may require dealer calibration/programming via John Deere Service ADVISOR).

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, clear the stored 523814.12 fault code, and test the PTO Speed 2 engagement to ensure the current drops to zero when switched off.
