Check the cause

  1. Inspect the CAN BUS and wiring harness between the RPT/BCU module (Power Module PC5) and the Y74 solenoid for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

  2. Test supply voltage at the Y74 solenoid connector using a multimeter (typically requires above 3V minimum threshold during diagnostics).

  3. Test the internal resistance of the Y74 PTO Speed 2 solenoid to ensure the coil is not shorted to ground or open.

  4. Verify that the PAP (Power Assist/PTO) control software is updated to the latest version to rule out software glitches causing erroneous CAN messages.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the rear PTO valve block on the rear chassis. Identify the Y74 Solenoid (PTO Speed 2 valve).

  3. Disconnect and Inspect

Unplug the electrical connector from the Y74 solenoid. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner. If the wiring harness is damaged, repair the broken wires or replace the pigtail connector.

  4. Replace the Solenoid (if faulty)

If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut/fastener holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old solenoid off and install the new OEM replacement.

  5. Reassemble

Secure the new solenoid, plug in the electrical connector, and reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Connect a John Deere diagnostic tool (Service ADVISOR) to clear the 523814.19 fault code. Start the tractor, engage the rear PTO, and select Speed 2 to verify the repair.
