John Deere 523815.04 – RPT (Rear Chassis) or BCU (Basic Control Unit): Rear PTO Speed 3 Solenoid High Amp Draw
Issue description
The control module has detected that the electrical current (amperage) flowing to the solenoid responsible for engaging PTO Speed 3 (Y75 solenoid) exceeds the normal operating limit. This typically points to a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Y75 PTO Speed 3 solenoid for signs of damage, chafing, melted insulation, or loose connections, specifically looking for a short to ground.
Disconnect the Y75 solenoid and test its operational integrity by measuring the resistance (ohms) across its terminals using a multimeter. A reading near zero indicates an internal short in the solenoid coil.
Use a John Deere diagnostic tool (like Service ADVISOR) to monitor the real-time amp draw on the power module output to the Y75 solenoid to identify deviations from the normal range.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Locate the Component
Locate the Rear PTO valve block and identify the PTO Speed 3 solenoid (Y75).
Disconnect Harness
Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a break, chafed wire, or short to ground in the harness, repair or replace the affected wiring section to restore proper electrical flow.
Remove Faulty Solenoid
If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test, unscrew the faulty Y75 solenoid from the PTO housing.
Install New Solenoid
Install the replacement solenoid, ensuring it is properly seated and tightened to the correct OEM torque specifications.
Reconnect and Test
Reconnect the electrical connector to the solenoid. Reconnect the battery, clear the stored 523815.04 fault code using a diagnostic tool, and test the PTO Speed 3 function to verify the amp draw is back within normal parameters.
