John Deere 523815.05 – XSC: Steering Control Valve, Current Too Low
Issue description
The control software has detected that the electrical current being drawn by the steering control valve (specifically the enable valve/solenoid) has dropped below the minimum expected threshold. This condition almost always indicates an open circuit, such as a disconnected plug, a broken wire in the harness, or a burned-out solenoid coil inside the valve.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness and the connector plugging into the steering control valve (enable solenoid) for physical damage, pulled wires, corrosion, or a loose connection.
Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the wiring circuit between the XSC module and the steering control valve to rule out a broken wire (open circuit) or high resistance points.
Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the steering enable solenoid itself. If the reading shows an open circuit (infinite resistance), the solenoid coil has failed.
If the wiring is intact, use John Deere Service ADVISOR (or a compatible diagnostic tool) to monitor the current supplied to the steering control valve in real-time to see if the XSC module is actually sending the correct signal.
Verify if there are any available software updates for the XSC control unit that might address current regulation bugs.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, splice in a new section of wire or replace the connector pigtail. Apply dielectric grease to the new connection to prevent future corrosion.
Replace the Valve/Solenoid (If Applicable)
If the solenoid coil tested as an open circuit, the steering control valve (or the specific enable solenoid) must be replaced. Relieve hydraulic pressure from the steering system. Disconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical connectors from the faulty steering control valve. Unbolt and remove the old valve. Install the new valve, using new O-rings/seals, and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical harness.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the XSC 523815.05 fault code. You may need to perform a steering system calibration via the cab monitor or Service ADVISOR to ensure the new valve responds correctly to the XSC module.
Test Operation
Test the manual steering and engage the AutoTrac system to verify the fault does not return.
