523815.11

John Deere 523815.11 – Rear Chassis (RPT): Rear PTO Speed 3 Solenoid Issue

Issue description

The controller has detected an electrical fault, short, or overload in the circuit controlling the Rear PTO Speed 3 Solenoid. This prevents the PTO from engaging properly or causes it to disengage unexpectedly.

Applies to these machines

  • 6110R
  • 6120R
  • 6130R
  • 6145R
  • 6155R
  • 6175R

  • 6215R
  • 6M Series
  • 6RC Series
  • 6D Series
  • 6E Series
  • 6J Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify safety interlocks including the seat safety switch and brake switches are functioning properly

  2. Check the transmission and hydraulic fluid level to rule out pressure drops that mimic solenoid failures

  3. Test voltage to the solenoid at the PTO connector (should be 12.6V - 13.8V) with the tractor running, brake off, and PTO switch engaged

  4. Measure solenoid resistance to ensure the coil reads between 2.5 and 4.5 ohms

  5. Inspect the wiring harness between the RPT module and the solenoid for chafing, corrosion, or partial connections

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

The Rear PTO solenoid is typically located on the hydraulic valve block near the top of the transaxle on the rear of the machine.

  3. Disconnect Electricals

Carefully unplug the wiring harness connector from the faulty solenoid. Clean the harness connector thoroughly to ensure no dirt or hydraulic fluid compromises the new connection.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

Unscrew the retaining nut and remove the faulty solenoid coil/valve assembly from its mounting block. Have a rag ready to catch any residual hydraulic fluid.

  5. Install the New Part

Clean the mounting area. Insert the new solenoid valve into the block and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  6. Reconnect and Test

Plug the electrical connector back in, reconnect the battery, and start the tractor. Perform a test run of the PTO to verify smooth engagement and ensure the 523815.11 code has cleared.
